Here we will be tying the fly Killer Bug by master Fran Sawyer. Frank is probably most know for his patter Pheasant Tail. Frank Sawyer originally developed the Killer Bug (in the 1930’s) to eradicate grayling from the river Avon where he worked as the river keeper. Reportedly, the Killer Bug, which was tied to imitate a scud, was more effective than even netting or electro-fishing! Hence the name Killer Bug. While the Killer Bug was intended to imitate a scud it bears a striking resemblance to a crane fly larva. The crane fly larva has a widely distribution throughout the world and are therefor a favoured food source of trout, particularly in the winter. Some angler reckon that the Killer Bug is actually a better crane fly larva imitation than it is a scud imitation. Wether it is or not, the Killer Bug works out great. Both for grayling and trout. Originally it was called the killer or (grayling) bug. It was originally tied with wool, Chadwick’s No 477. I don't have the Chadwick's No 477, but I'll use similar colour. The Killer bug pattern may be one of the most simple flies you'll ever tie, it's working great for trout here in Iceland and elsewhere and you should have few in you box!
