Anderson's Bird of Prey October Caddis Var.

The Bird of Prey is an effective year-round caddis, but during the late summer and into the fall months, the October Caddis coloration really shines. Rick Anderson developed the pattern in California, but it is a useful fly to have across North America.

I like to have an orange color that is a little subdued and not overly bright. The Shrimp UV Ice Dubbing I've used here is almost perfect, but the colors aren't consistent from batch to batch and some of the dubbing I have is a little too far on the pink side for this fly.

I tend to use a little smaller bead on this pattern, using a 4.0mm bead for the size 6 and a 3.5mm for size 8. You can use either brass or tungsten beads for the fly pattern. If you need to get even deeper, a few wraps of lead wire behind the bead should help a little extra weight.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
