Monte's Biography

Monte Smith is a well-rounded and accomplished fly tyer. His work is featured in books, periodicals, on websites, and in frames around the world. From his original featherwing streamers within the pages of Tying Classic Freshwater Streamers by David Klausmeyer to a four recent articles featuring original patterns in Northwest/Southwest Fly Fishing magazines, there are a number of projects that feature his flies. He was one of 21 tyers to contribute to the Classics Salmon Fly Poster Project to raise money for ALS research in honor of Gary LaFontaine and will be a featured tyer in a forthcoming book on classic salmon flies.

Raised in western Oregon and flyfishing since the age of 12, Monte found the fly tying kit some years later and a passion was born! Tying featherwing streamers immediately became an area of keen interest, as the long fly is a superb example of something that can be tied for both fishing and presentation purposes. His tying demos featuring streamers
are always well-received.

Monte is a member of the Daiichi Pro Staff and manages what he calls a humble little "tying resource" at www.nwflytyer.com. He continues to make his home in Halsey, Oregon with his wife, son, and daughter as he continues his angling and tying pursuits. Other interests include writing, photography, and baseball.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
