Marcelo Morales Streamers

For those familiar with the Paul Schmookler and Ingrid Sils series of books and journals, Marcelo Morales is an impressive presence inside the covers, filling pages upon pages with his flawlessly tied streamers. Marcelo is also the man behind the poster which features 120 Carrie Stevens streamer patterns tied to accompanying the book Forgotten flies. The Unnamed #2 is one of these patterns from the poster and the dressing was taken from one of Carrie Stevens streamers found in a private collection.

Two variations of Keith Fulsher's Thunder Creek appear in Marcelo's collection of streamers. The first is the Limay T.C., named for the Limay River, considered one of Argentina's great trout rivers. The second is the Argentine Perch T.C. based on Fusher's Yellow Perch T.C. streamer. The pattern is darker than the original and tied to imitate the Percichthys trucha also known as creole perch. They are a native species in Argentina and an important prey species that helps feed the legendary brown trout of the Patagonia.

Marcelo has also contributed several of his own original streamer patterns. The Laura's Special is a fly tied in collaboration with his wife Laura. She was responsible for picking out the hackles for the fly and Marcelo put everything together in a beautifully blended design. The Cree and ginger tones married with bright pink is a delight to the eye.

The Blue Navas is a pattern that pays homage to one of Argentina's oldest commercial tiers, José Navas. He began tying flies in the 1940's to serve the anglers on the Patagonia. His flies had a reputation for bringing in monster trout along the Chimehuin and other well known rivers. The Navas is based upon one of his most simple and effective flies, the Matona. The Blue Navas builds upon the simple design with some additions such as the blue body and other details that make the original design more attractive to angler and not necessarily the fish.

The Pink Dace is a small and delicate streamer that Marcelo designed to fish the Collón Curá river during annual minnow migrations. The badger hackles give the fly a prefect silhouette and the pink body and yellow throat add a subtle glimpse of colour that mimic the inner parts of these almost transparent minnows.

The Blue Midnight is a streamer designed by Marcelo using colours he considers quite effective for sea run brown trout. The dark kingfisher blue for the body along with the furnace hackle, blue peacock checks and orange belly are a tempting combination for the for big sea run brown trout of Tierra del Fuego.

Over the past couple years, Marcelo has been working with FlyDreamers.com, a social media site designed specifically for fly tyers and anglers to share. The site is host to video, pictures and articles covering a range of fly fishing topics from destinations to fly tying.

You can find tons of step by step tutorials and some fantastic photos of Marcelo's flies on Fly Dreamers. He posts a good number of photographic tutorials such as this Matuka step-by-step.

Thanks Marcelo for sharing your streamers with us.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
