#30-2013 Family Secret Hairwing - Robert Frandsen #30-2013 Family Secret Hairwing - Robert Frandsen

Tied by: Robert Frandsen
Originated by: Dr. Edgar A. Burke
Source: Streamer Fly Tying and Fishing; Bates (Pg 268-269)

Hook: Mustad 3665 A #2
Head: Black 8/0
Tail: Between ten and twenty peacock sword fibers, depending on size of hook. The tail is long and very bunchy
Body: Silver flat tinsel
Ribbing: Silver oval tinsel
Throat: A bunch of guinea hen hackle fibers, rather thick and long
Wing: White Arctic runner
Eye: Jungle cock
Head: Black

Notes: The Family Secret has an interesting genesis as far as streamers go. For more on the history of the pattern you can see the Family Secret feather-wing streamer (#14). Robert used Arctic runner hair a.k.a. polar pony a.k.a. Icelandic horse for the wing in his version. The hair itself is similar to a high quality Arctic fox hair, with a wavy base and straight tips. The hair isn't quite as translucent as you would expect to have with polar bear, but dying the hair tends to reveal it's translucent properties.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
