One of my favorite places to be
Tying crib
I tye in the bedroom, so I need a lid on my tying station to avoid feathers and hair all over the place. I used to tye on a regal copy but having to locate a size 18 hook, that was shot out of the vise and onto the bed made me buy my current vise. I found my roll top for a mere 300,- dkr.,the seller citing the tableplate being stuck, took a me exactly thirty seconds to make it unstuck, nice. The small drawers hold hooks, beads, eyes, thread and assorted odds and ends and I have one large drawer for hair and fur and another for feathers, leaving the last one for "miscellaneous

My retreat... Drawers filled with supplies...

Basic Idea was to have a separate room for fly tying even if there isn't a separate room available in the house. The dimensions are width 110cm, depth 70cm and high 175cm ... with doors fully open it has a width of 220cm. I designed this one while I was building it ... so it took me a couple of weeks ... I guess I could make a copy of it working 70 hours (most time is down to sanding ... again and again)

Finally I made it = organize stuff and clean it. I started tying early 2013 and the first 2-3 years I tied about 4000 flies = stupid. But I learned a lot of tying and my flies are good looking - at least my own eyes. I tie flies for pike, salmon, trout, rainbow, grayling, perch, pike perch, wet, dry etc. so I have to have a lot of tying material ;-)

My pride and joy is complete

My tying station is not movable because I just have a lot of stuff. This is my work area. I have other areas storage areas from many years of accumulating stuff. Back in 1998, I built a "shed" (12ft x 24ft). A third of the shed is my fly tying area. I have two sets of draws under the desk top that contains fly tying material, along with shelves for books both fly fishing and personal. It also contains my stereo and my computer. The area was pretty clean when I took the picture. It gets pretty messy when I tie. I the other part of the shed. In the the other part of the shed I have cabinets and shelves with fly tying material and tools.

I like seeing other peoples' tying caves/desks. Here is mine. The desk was made for me by a local cabinet maker. It was the first fly tying bench he ever made. I am still working to replace all of the plastic containers with more "furniture" for storage. I suppose we all began with the plastic stuff because we had no idea what our hobby/addiction would become. If I had only known!

l am so lucky that the wife lets me have a room in the basement and l got a big dinning room table to tie on, lots of place for storage (she managed to take up space with her stuff). When l start tying l am on a roll. l tie in 10's so l can have the group tied in about 1.5 hours and then l am on the the next group... NOW for you new tyers. When you finish tying a fly put all your stuff away and then go to the next fly. Don't be like me and leave it out. So far today l have spent 5 hours cleaning off the desk and l am still not done... putting all the hooks, beads and materials into there rightful place is taking forever.
